The FINN-AQUA? Multiple-Effect Water Still is designed for production
of pyrogen free water for injection (WFI or distillate) for pharmaceutical and
biotechnological applications. WFI is generated from pre-treated feed water by
heating and evaporating it with plant steam.
The MWS uses the following utilities:
-plant steam (saturated, non-purified steam)
-feed water (de-ionized or reverse osmosis)
-cooling water
-instrument air
-electricity
The water still consists of the columns, preheaters, two condensers,
feed water pump and a feed water tank.
The incoming feed water passes through a condenser and through the
preheaters before it enters to the gas separator located at the top of the
first column. Feed Water is heated using plant steam, which causes the water to
evaporate into steam vapour. The steam is then subjected to a series of
entrainment separation stages
Upon reaching the bottom of the column, the steam vapour is forced to
change direction by 180 degrees. This directional change forces any droplets of
water not evaporated along with any impurities or particles from the steam to
be forced to the bottom of the column. Water that was not evaporated in the
first column is directed to the next column as feed water.
The steam vapour continues vertically up the riser space of the column
and around spiral shaped guides. These spiral guides work as a centrifugal
separator which separates the remaining entrained water and inpurities from the
pure steam. The separated water is removed from the process as blowdown.
The pure steam produced in the first column is then directed to the next
column as source of heat energy.
The same process repeats in each column: Non-evaporated feed water from
the previous column is vaporized by the pure steam from the previous column
Pure steam is condensed to distillate using cooling effect from feed
water and cooling water.
