Equipment Description
Okuma LB15 Series II Lathe

  • Description:
  • Cleaned every part of this lathe, repainted all surfaces that were factory painted (in some cases after sandblasting), and repaired some sheet
  • Completely cleaned the electrical cabinet, and disassembled, checked and rebuilt the VFD, which is the regen type with grid synchronization.
  • Previously the machine didn't have leveling pads, so we made a set of ten from ductile iron plate. As mentioned, the door was disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt with a new polycarbonate window.
  • All cooling fans are new, and some circuits were rewired.
  • All tools for disassembling were made, the turret holder and sourced new bearings from Nachi (those that haven't been installed remain unopened in their boxes).
  • The machine lacked a turret bushing.
  • Spindle runout is nearly zero and the bearings are quiet.
  • The machine lacked a tailstock from the factory.
  • The chip conveyor was in poor condition, so it was scrapped and made a coolant tank from stainless steel and
PVC. It rolls on ball casters.
  • Relevant surfaces carefully machined on a huge manual horizontal milling machine and made a new gib from billet bronze
  • The remaining gibs are good, but the cross slide must be skimmed to match.
  • Modified the 70mm Kitagawa chuck cylinder and the draw tube that came with the LB15, and will be keeping these items.
  • We have a 65mm Kitagawa cylinder and related parts that can be provided with the LB15.
  • The main operating system, seller (Horton via HGR) said it worked, but the backup battery must be replaced, which is a
    common issue.
  • Ball screws are excellent and were probably replaced not long before we obtained the machine, as it appears,
    was the x-axis servo motor.
