Equipment Description
The RR Mechatronics Lorrca MaxSis (catalogue LEAS06LORC) is a benchtop laser-assisted optical rotational red blood cell analyzer, or ektacytometer. It measures the rheological behavior of red blood cells by shearing a thin layer of RBCs suspended in PVP between a static bob and a rotating cup (Couette geometry) and analyzing the resulting laser diffraction pattern. In a single temperature-controlled platform it performs RBC deformability (elongation index versus shear stress), osmotic gradient ektacytometry (Osmoscan) and RBC aggregometry, which makes it a common research tool for sickle cell disease, hereditary spherocytosis and other hemolytic and microcirculatory disorders. The unit is self-contained and semi-automated: sample, reagent and waste handling are built in. Photo 2 shows the open instrument with the on-board fluidics bay holding the Lorrca Osmo LOW, Osmo HIGH and X-Clean reagent bottles plus the de-ionized water and waste bottles, the sample needle station with a sample tube in place, and the measuring head carrying a Class 3R laser warning label (emitted wavelength 400-700 nm). The nameplate in photo 5 reads Lorrca MaxSis Red Blood Cell Analyser, LEAS06LORC, SN 057395, manufactured 2019-07 by RR Mechatronics Manufacturing B.V., Zwaag, The Netherlands. Per the manufacturer's manual the instrument runs on 100/240 V, 50-60 Hz single-phase mains. Additional items appear in the photos: a set of spare Lorrca reagent and waste bottles with pick-up caps and tubing (photo 4) and a sealed box of Lorrca Elon ISO reagent, REF QRR030901, 100 x 5 mL, lot 2308567B (photo 3). The analyzer came out of an R&D facility. No computer, monitor or software dongle is visible in the photos, and no powered-up display was photographed, so operating condition has not been verified; cosmetically the housing is clean and complete.
