It is a dual-mode system that offers two completely separate and distinctly different capabilities in one convenient device. You select one of two modes—a live robotic microscope for the examination of specimens on glass slides or a static digital pathology scanning mode for the creation of digitized tissue samples. We have used this in our dermatopathology lab for almost two years. We purchased it for $85,000. We have gotten bigger and busier and needed a scanner that could hold more slides. We really liked the autoloader feature as well as the simplicity of use. This scanner took up very little room and the customer service with Mikroscan was wonderful. We recently had this scanner updated by Mikroscan where they:
Focus Map Verification Step: We added a step to verify the focus map prior to initiating a scan. This involves focusing on each focus point within a region of interest and evaluating the largest delta between focus point values. If the difference exceeds the threshold of 30 µm, the scan will not proceed, and the user will be notified. The aim is to prevent scanning when the focus values across points in a region are out of specification, thus saving time on scans that would otherwise yield poor results. This tool is helpful in identifying issues before scanning, such as poor slide preparation, improper slide registration to the stage, or significant variations in tissue thickness and/or folds.
Multiple ROI Scanning: We added the capability to scan multiple regions of interest (ROIs) and merge them into a single whole slide image. This enhancement is designed to isolate regions without scanning the white spaces in between and to assist with challenging slides where different pieces of tissue are on varying planes. This feature is also beneficial for reducing scanning time on slides with tissue sections that are distanced apart.
